My 10 Favorite Things: Alternative Bathroom Items

My 10 favorite alternative bathroom items! Need a razor that won't burn? Heard of the Lunette? // The Ezer Wife

I’ve had many conversations, both in real life and virtually with you guys about alternatives to items we use everyday. You either want to save some money by getting an alternative to disposables or you want to be more aware of what’s going onto and into your body. Whatever your reason for wanting to use “alternative” products, you’re in the right place.

If you have eyes that see and ears that hear then you’re being flooded with information on what the best brand of toothpaste is, which mascara will make you look the most beautiful, and so on. Oftentimes, “small”  or alternative companies don’t have the money to advertise, so they can go unnoticed. And sometimes, companies that used to care about what ingredients were in their products are bought out by bigger companies who then change the recipe but still use the “alternative” name, which is the case with Tom’s of Maine among others.

If you’re looking for some natural alternatives to everyday bathroom items, I’ve got your covered. But first, why is it so important that we look for natural products? Well, that’s because our skin is our biggest organ. It absorbs everything we put on it! Read more about how chemicals in most of our beauty products could be harming you. (Disclaimer: I’ve never used nor heard of the products they mention at the end, so I cannot attest to nor do I promote those products).

Moom

This sugar-based hair removal kit is made of ingredients that you could eat, think sugar, herbs, and lemon juice in some. This kit comes with reusable fabric strips that can be used over and over again. According to the company and several reviewers, this product isn’t nearly as painful to use as other waxed-based products.

Safety Razor

This product is fabulous! If you’re from my generation, meaning 30 or younger, you may not even know what a safety razor is. Think old-fashioned, steel, single blade. It sounds scary, and the first time I used it, it took me about 3 minutes to finally touch it to my skin. I just envisioned a perfectly shaped razor blade gash in my calf. I’ve been using this razor for about 4 months now and think I’ve cut myself 2 times. After all, it is called a safety razor. Some will tell you that idea of needing 3, 4, 5, blades is ludicrous and so American of us–the bigger the better, right? I would disagree with that when it comes to this single blade safety razor. Now, there are gobs of different blades you can use, here’s what we use. You get 100 blades for $12. And yes, I said we, my husband and I share this razor. He uses it for his face, and loves it. Says he won’t go back to those cheaply designed multi-blade plastic things. And I love it for all the areas in which this girl uses it for.

Lunette

Gentleman, this product is not for you so I would suggest you not even click the link, your mind will be opened to something you probably don’t want it opened to. That’s your warning. Now, ladies, I’ll keep this brief, but your mind may also be opened to something you never knew about. If you told me this product existed a couple years ago, I would think you were crazy. When I first read about menstrual cups, I’ll be honest, I was grossed out. However, the more I thought about it, the more it made sense. Cotton laced with pesticides and other toxic chemicals so close to a vital organ scared me enough to buy this and give it a try. Now, it’s the only thing I use. There are several different brands, but this is the one I’ve chosen. Please note, there are different sizes based on whether you’ve had children or not, the one linked above is for those who haven’t. Model 2 would be a great option for someone who has.

Earthpaste

This one may be the most alternative. The idea of brushing your teeth with dirt may be too much for you. I understand. My husband looked at me like I had 4 heads when I told him what it was. This short video will tell you a little more about Earthpaste, and it’s quite funny. By only using natural ingredients, this product will clean your teeth, remove toxins from your mouth, and can be eaten so it’s safe for kids. In fact due to the adsorption (not absorption) from the bentonite clay swallowing this toothpaste can help your entire body detox. They make Peppermint, Wintergreen (my favorite), Cinnamon (his favorite), and Lemon (specifically designed for kids due to the light and tangy flavor).

Preserve toothbrush

This was one of the first alternative products I started buying. The company has (or at least had, I’m not sure anymore) a program where you could set up to receive a new toothbrush every 3 months. You could send your old one back and they’d reuse the handle and you’d get free points. These toothbrushes are made from reused plastic already, as are most of the products Preserve sells. The curved handle is designed to get to those hard to reach places.

HD Clear Spot Treatment

Yes, even at my ripe old age of 25 I still get those stubborn pimples popping up from time to time. This spot treatment works great for the rare or not so rare breakout. By using a blend of essential oils doTERRA has come up with a formula to help with breakouts and restore cells that have been damaged.

Primal Pit Paste

Recommendation of this product comes from my husband as I am unable to use this product due to a sensitivity to baking soda. I use a homemade version quite similar to their recipe, but use arrowroot powder instead of baking soda. I have recently discovered though that by using a little bit of baking soda, my skin is able to tolerate it. Primal Pit Paste is a natural alternative to the deodorant you’ve been using for years. My husband, who’s quite active, loved the way the thyme and lemongrass smelled.

Shea Butter

This raw ingredient is a must have for the bathroom. It can be used alone as a moisturizer for the face and body, or mixed with other ingredients to make lotion, hair conditioner, lip balm, and so much more.

Coconut Oil

Coconut oil is versatile and is a must have not only for my bathroom, but also my kitchen. In the bathroom I use it for washing my face (acts as a cleanser and moisturizer), I use fractionated coconut oil with essential oils in my veggie capsules. It’s in the pomade I make for my husband (which will be for sale in my shop soon!), in my deodorant, is a great make-up remover on its own. The uses are truly endless.

Essential Oils

The last and likely most important are essential oils. Some of our most used are melaleuca for dandruff and skin issues, peppermint for headaches and focus, lavender for scraps and bruises, ClaryCalm for women things, and OnGuard for immune boosting. Check out some of my homemade blends in my shop, Generous Provisions.

What alternative items do you love in your bathroom? Do you use any of the products I use? If so, what’s your experience?

  1. Great recommendations! I am especially intrigued by the safety razor seeing as I have been looking for an alternative for those plastic things covered with “moisturizer.”

    • Rachel L, thanks for the comment! I was super nervous about using the safety razor, it just looked intimidating! But I love it now. That one linked is the one we have, it said it had a “long handle”, but is perfect size for me (and my husband).
